Singing in the Beans

Debbie Reynolds’ book is full of beans

Debbie Reynolds, the famous actress from Singing in the Rain, shares her family’s bean recipe in her memoir out this week. “I grew up in El Paso, Texas,” she says. “All our neighbors were Hispanic. We were the only Caucasians. No one had money and we could only afford beans.”

Reynolds Family Bean Recipe

2 cups dried pinto beans

1T baking soda

pinch of seasoned salt

1 T castor oil

1 half onion chopped (optional)

chili powder to taste

small can of baby chili peppers

Soak the pinto beans overnight in water with the baking soda, seasoned salt and castor oil. The next day, drain and rinse with clear water. Cover the beans with water and place in a slow cooker. If desired, add chopped white onion for flavor as well as the chili powder and baby chili peppers.
